Wingert Grebing Brubaker & Walshok LLP secured the reinstatement of longtime Torrey Pines High School boys lacrosse head coach Jono Zissi after the San Dieguito Union High School District initially decided not to renew his coaching contract for the 2026 season amid allegations related to CIF recruiting rules. Partners Steve Grebing and Mark Amador represented Coach Zissi.
Over more than a decade, Coach Zissi built one of the most successful high school lacrosse programs in the country, leading Torrey Pines to 12 CIF championships and helping establish a culture recognized well beyond San Diego. The decision not to renew his contract drew a strong response from players, families, and alumni, many of whom attended school board meetings to speak about the program’s culture and Coach Zissi’s impact on and off the field.
Matters involving CIF recruiting allegations often turn on technical bylaw language, process, and the underlying record. Our work focused on navigating those issues at the school and district level and advocating for a resolution that allowed Coach Zissi to return to coaching.
On January 22, 2026, the San Dieguito Union High School District Board voted unanimously to reinstate Coach Zissi for the spring 2026 season.
“I’m incredibly thankful for the support I received from my current and ex-players, their families, and the entire community. I’m especially grateful to Steve Grebing and Mark Amador for standing by me, believing in me and helping me through this process. Their wisdom and steady guidance based on years of broad legal experience coupled with a unique expertise in CIF matters made all the difference. Steve and Mark are winners.” said Coach Zissi.
Wingert Grebing Brubaker & Walshok LLP maintains an active Sports Law practice representing coaches, student-athletes, and families throughout California in CIF-related matters, including eligibility issues, recruiting allegations, and administrative disputes.
